The design is for a young couple and their child. One of the main design brief was a Fung Shui issue. The bedrooms cannot come in contact with the exterior windows. A set back zone was developed in response. The zone is wide veranda separating the bedrooms from the windows. This is a semi-outdoor play area for the child. This set back zone is further carried into to the living/dinning area and the gym/guest bedroom. This zone becomes a raised platform in these spaces, providing a banquette for the living room and a reading/massage deck for the gym.
A series of solid oak planks encased in grey steel frames were used to define the 'facades' of varies rooms, e.g. entry closet, kitchen, master bathroom. These plank walls are meant to allow light to filter into these spaces/rooms. We thought of them as wooden huts within the apartment. The material palette was deliberately restrictive. Oak planks walls, walnut floor, a beige limestone for bathrooms, and painted walls. ©copyright HO + HOU Studio Architects
