Curatorial Idea:
A Class on Space: Point and Line to Plane
Within a space, many things are ‘unperceived’. These things are subjects of
contemplation during the creative process – structure, proportion, volume, crowd
flow, construction method, and light. This exhibition guides viewers in exploring the
fundamental elements that build up space, through designing interactive installations, starting from the basic components of point, line, surface, and arriving at volume. We invite visitors to participate hands-on, to explore the effects conjured by these elements, and to awaken their senses to space.
This exhibition will use “Point and Line to Plane” to link art and architecture, pairing
works by Tada Minami, Li Yuan-Chia, Lin Richard, Chen Shiau-Peng, Kang Ya-Chu,
and Hsieh Jung-Wei, as well as introducing the TFAM building, the NTU Agricultural
Exhibition Hall, and Tunghai University’s Luce Memorial Chapel, architecture pieces
exhibiting unique modernist qualities. These pieces will guide viewers in
understanding the shared perspectives between artists and architects – observing
and thinking about the structure of a composition, their gaze encounters that of the
creator and senses their creative intent.
Exhibition Design
Following Kandinsky's ideas, the exhibition design is an exercise in interpret the 2 dimensional composition, into a spatial experience, using the idea of rhythm, balance, proportion, repetition, contrast, shape......and so on. Points, lines, and surfaces, virtual or solid, up or down, dense or sparse, high or low, form the infinite possibilities that allow visitors to feel the basic elements, scales and changes of space.
Organic Settlement
Inspired by Kandinsky’s No.8 painting, 18 types of wood block were designed, a total of 3000 blocks were made to be use in the ‘field’. An abstract landform is design to foster the possibility of dwelling formed from small cluster into large settlements. The blocks can be combined, piled- up, and can form endless variations of combinations. The installation invites you to explore the infinite creative possibilities brought about by the point, line, surface and volume and also their connections.
